hipar – to hiccup
Mari Paz hipó en un momento inapropiado.
Mari Paz hiccupped at an inappropriate moment.
tener hipo – to have (the) hiccups
El niño tuvo hipo después de comer.

The Spanish language makes the same distinction that is made in English between hipar (to hiccup) and tener hipo (to have hiccups). Sometimes when studying Spanish there’s little to learn conceptually, and it’s a matter of simply learning the words.
