poner la mesa – to set the table

poe-NAYR lah MAY-sah

Ejemplo:
El viejo puso la mesa para recibir a su amigo.
The old man set the table to receive his friend.

Neither English nor Spanish speakers think of simple phrases like “to set the table” as idiomatic.  They have used such phrases for so long that they have taken on internal meaning.  In reality, neither “setting” nor “putting” the table makes much literal sense.  That’s why it’s better to learn the Spanish phrase and then repeat it until it takes on its own internal meaning for you.
